How do I choose the best ergonomic office chair for me?
There are many types of ergonomic chairs available for office use. No one type of ergonomic office chair is necessarily the best for everyone. There are important things to consider when looking for the right ergonomic office chair. These points will allow the correct fit between the individual user and his or her specific needs.
What features should you look for in a new ergonomic chair?
Chair height adjustment
An ergonomic office chair’s seat height should be easily adjustable. A pneumatic adjustment lever is preferable. A seat height that ranges from approx 14” – 19” off the floor should accommodate 95% of users. This will allow you to have your feet flat on the floor, with thighs horizontal and arms even with the height of the desk.
Lumbar support adjustment
Lower back support in an ergonomic chair is very importent. The lumbar curves inward, and sitting for periods without support for this curve leads to poor posture (which flattens the natural curve) and strains the lower back. An ergonomic chair should have a lumbar adjustment (both height and depth) so each user can get the proper fit to support the curvature of the lower back.
Ergonomic chair width and tilt adjustment
Your new ergonomic chair should have width and depth adjustability to support you comfortably. Typically between 17-20 inches wide works well. The depth seat slider, from the front to back of the seat, needs to travel enough so that you can sit with your back against the backrest of the ergonomic office chair while leaving approximately 2 - 4 inches between the back of the knees and the seat of the chair. The forward or backward tilt of the seat should be adjustable to avoid a forward leaning posture.
Ergonomic Chair backrest adjustment
The seat back of your ergonomic office chair should be 12 to 19 inches wide. If the backrest is separate from the seat, it should be adjustable in height and angle. It should be able to support the natural curve of the back and feature proper support of the lumbar. Your ergonomic office chair should not have the seat and backrest together as one piece - the backrest should be adjustable in forward and back angles, with a locking mechanism to secure it from going too far backward or moving forward once you have determined the most comfortable position.
Seat and Back Construction Materials
The material of your ergonomic office chair seat and back should have adequate padding, or mesh travel to be comfortable to sit on for extended periods of time. Having a cloth fabric that breathes is much better than a harder surface.
Ergonomic Armrests
Office chair armrests should be height and width adjustable. They should allow the user's arms to rest comfortably and shoulders to be relaxed. The elbows and lower arms should rest lightly, and the forearm should not be on the armrest while typing.
Chair Swivel
Any ergonomic chair should easily rotate so you can reach different areas of your desk without straining. You should not have to press your back against the arms or side of your chair or rotate your shoulders to access locations to the side or back of your chair.
